It is not uncommon for Australia to make national headlines for extreme drought and extraordinarily unfriendly farming and ranching conditions

The poet Dorothea Mackellar called Australia “a sunburnt country, a land … of droughts and flooding rains”. Seventy percent of the mainland is classed as arid or semi-arid, meaning it receives less than 500mm (19.69 inches) of rain annually.
