Obituary: Svend Jonas Mauland

Svend Jonas Mauland

September 18, 1931 – May 3, 2020

Svend Jonas Mauland, 88, died May 3 at the Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber, Montana.

Swen, as he was known to most, was born September 18, 1931 in Big Timber to Jonas Adolph Mauland and Grace Marie Monroe Mauland.  His early years were spent on the ranch north of Big Timber with his parents and three sisters.

Swen attended grade school at Rapstad and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1949.  For the next few years, he worked on the family ranch and for other ranches in the area.

He met Doris Marie Thomas, the new teacher in town and after three weeks of dating they were engaged and married June 17, 1956.

During their 61-year marriage, they raised four children and mentored many young lives.

Swen worked the family ranch on Big Timber Creek until 1978 when they sold the ranch and moved to town for a short time, then on to “Wildcat,” where they lived for the next 23 years.

During most of that time Swen was a law enforcement officer, undersheriff and sheriff for 12 years.  After retirement, Swen continued brand inspecting until just before his death and was the forest patrol officer well into his 80’s.

Swen had many interests.  He loved fishing, hunting, and traveling to Alaska and Texas.  He also loved to watch the cows drink, the grass grow, and irrigation water trickle across a field.  He also loved to watch people and in his later years he enjoyed “sookiedoo” (Sudoku) and became an avid reader.

He could be found in his recliner on the front lawn on a warm, sunny day sound asleep.

Swen worked hard and had a good life.  He was a good, kind, and compassionate man.  He leaves behind many good friends and will be dearly missed.

Swen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris, and his sister Noreda Harris.

He is survived by his daughters Kathy Crane (Mike Gunels) of San Antonio, Texas; Sandra (Russ) Lewis, Wolf Creek, Montana; Susan (Steve) Pauli; and son, Mike (April) Mauland, all of Big Timber.

He leaves behind nine grandchildren, Tony (Jen) Lewis; Zachary (Nicole) Crane; Katie (Chris) Schuler; Hannah Pauli; Rachel Pauli; Taylor (Tyler) Fulkerson; Ruby Pauli; Matthew Mauland; and Sierra Mauland.  He is also survived by nine great grandchildren; his sisters Wanda Lavold and Jadawega Horn; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for both Swen and Doris will be held June 13.  Time and place are to be decided upon soon.
